Does your Lumia 1520 have a buggy OIS?

Overall, I absolutely love this phone but I noticed that during video (especially grassy outdoor scenes) that the video shakes and jitters because of a faulty OIS.

I wondered if it is just a hardware issue but I had my doubts that is solely hardware because the issue seemed to be worse in certain cases and barely noticeable in other situations.

Now here is where it gets weird.

1. My phone is an HK RM-937 Variant. Video was terrible on 8.0 HK stock Rom
2. Video was equally bad when I flashed to GB rom and then updated OTA to 8.1/cyan
3. Flashed the phone back to HK 8.1 and the video is noticeably less shaky but it still jitters.

Then I got a bright idea. Let's try the Finish Rom. And guess what?
Barely any shake. Even in low light. When I get a change I will try post up some videos.:smile:

But I caution my enthusiasm. I want to thoroughly test this outdoors and many situations before I feel the problem is fixed. But so far so good!!

This suggests that different regions have slightly tweaked and optimized firmwares.

Interesting findings, it makes me wonder the OIS is partially relying on a software routine to offset the shaking video...

Ya I wonder too. I think there is an issue between the OIS driver and the gyro sensors.

It's still a tiny bit jittery on full zoom but nothing on non-zoom. Also noticed much faster continuous auto focus both in video and camera mode.

Very interested to test tomorrow in brighter light.

I've a feeling that OIS technology used in 1520/930 isn't the same as used on 920/925. Even with larger 1/2.3" sensor, better super sampling technology and more 20MP, night photography and filming on 1520/930 is at most sub par as compared to the likes of 920/925 which have smaller 1/3" sensors and small 8MP albeit with bigger aperture f/2 as opposed to 1520/930's f/2.4.

Nope. Still shaky outdoors but not nearly as bad. Probably only about 20% of what it was before. Photo autofocus is super quick now.

Indoors in low light it's rock solid. No shake. WTF?

So for others with my same issue, it's probably worth it to try out the Finnish rom. Won't completely remove the ois issue but at least there is a significant improvement.

have u ever wonder this can cause by your newly changes on region firmware actually hard reset the whole phone??
My suspect is not the region firmware that have different but rather your original newly install Cyan not doing proper hard reseting but after you went for Finnish Cyan firmware your phone got proper reset and all the new Cyan fixes goodies work out as it should... just my 2cents...

No. I know how to flash and reset. Have done this multiple times. Even went back to HK. Nope. Finish seems the best for some odd reason.

I do not have a 1520 but my phone, the Nexus 5 does have OIS as well.

What's weird is that the camera often focuses in the wrong place and you have to hold the phone steady to fix the focus(unless you tap the screen).

Video recording isn't jittery however continuous focus seems to fail sometimes, if I start recording a video and the viewfinder is blurry, when the video starts to record it will still be blurry(you can't tap to focus).

OIS seems to be giving my device some focusing problems. Weird, it was supposed to aid people with shaky hands and achieve proper focus but I still need to keep the phone steady(especially in lowlight).
The end result(especially in lowlight) is amazing with OIS though.

Ya I have zero issues with OIS on my 1020. It's fantastic in video and photos. No shake at all or jitters. It seems a bunch of 1520 owners are stuck with this defect. Not happy to say the least.

What product code for the Finnish software? Wouldn't mind trying this. The Gb software has definitely got the worst ois shake. I'm downloading HK now. Just haven't found the Finnish version.

Just to ask, does the Finnish CV ROM come with a 2G option under cellular? From where i'm from, 3G isn't everywhere and it kills my battery leaving it on that, much more on 4G...
