Howdy folks,

Longtime Windows Phone fan and user, but I had to jump ship for work reasons. Recently however, I've made the decision to comeback. Android literally depresses me, and although the apps were fun to have, I'm not really an app person, more of a productivity person.

I recently purchased a 950 XL (Still waiting for it to get here actually), and I know this phone has had it's share of bugs and performance issues, but I can't deal with this android crap anymore.

What is the path of least resistance when it comes to updating my Lumia to most current or safe release? :smile:

Just stick with the production or RTM build, you will do fine.
Most of the OS issues have been "fixed".
Read through the forum...you will probably find the info you are looking for.

In general yes. Some people do get by fine on the fast ring as their daily driver, but some don't and things are liable to change on a dime.

As these fine folks said, stick to RTM.

If you asked me a few days ago if I would recommend installing the latest Fast Ring build on your primary phone, I would've said go ahead since I've done just that on my Lumia 950 (pre-AU builds) and putting my phone on the Fast Ring had never caused any major problems for me, until a few days ago that is.

What happened was I updated my phone to the latest FR build (15043), and in the first 24 hours, my phone was running fine. Stable, even snappier than the previous build (15031), and everything seemed to show as if W10M is heading into the final steps of polishing in preparation for the CU being released to the public.

Then my phone got the BSOD. I had to use WDRT to reset my phone back to 10586, and lost all of my precious photos and game saves and whatnot.

I could choose to be salty and be angry at Microsoft, but I'm a matured adult who knows best that this is just one of the risks of being an Insider Fast Ring. I chose to let it go, and now my phone has been reset.

Yet I still choose to update it AGAIN to the latest Insider Fast Ring build.

Just remember, if you're willing to cope with the risks, then go ahead. Insider is the way to go. If not, please stay away.

Welcome to the forums and thanks for sharing your story. I also have a 950XL and I really like it. Like you, I am not an app person and I prefer productivity, so my phone is everything I need. As everyone is saying, stick to the production build to start with. Although, in saying that, I have the latest fast ring build on my daily driver and it works enough for me. As with everything though, your mileage may vary. For now, just remain stable and start to enjoy using your phone.

listen, just take it from somebody who had a L950XL and lost his phone and then decided to try android again... the L950xl is an awesome phone that has everything going for it. the "ONLY" thing is that it does indeed suffer from is the app gap, but let me inform you that this is nothing compared to the problems that you have with all these android apps/games is with malware/adware/viruses and privacy issues that you have to worry about when installing these apps! with windows phone you have NON of those problems... I would rather be missing some apps then have to deal with all these security problems with android. sorry but I LOVE WM10 and the peace of mind that comes with using WM10.

But to the OP, I would recommend Insider Production Release Ring. Don't have to wait for your carrier to approve, and it's very stable. I did it on my L950, and it runs better. Also, I have work e-mail, and I think GOOD prevents me from going to Slow or Fast Ring. There is some sort of notice about administrator controlling something something, can't remember. But, Production Release Ring is just fine, and very stable.

Yes, you need to join insider, after the device restarts you select insider again and the default setting is Release Preview Ring, verify the correct ring is selected, then check for updates. Just like that you'll be a rock star.
