Just seen this article about the issue.

Microsoft acknowledges Windows phone error 8500201D preventing email syncing

MS has actually been aware of this issue for a couple of weeks now. Why it's taking so long to fix, your guess is as good as mine. I figured it would take an unacceptable long time for them to fix, so that's why I just created a new MS account. Took me a few days to everything back up and running, but since the switch, mail, calendar, and notifications are working better than they ever did before.

This error code seems to have been resolved for me, for the moment at least. Does this error code remain for anyone? I think people are still having issues with contacts, however.

Error code gone for me too today after 2 weeks approx.I hope it does not recur again.But I did not get back contact photos.
