Facebook chat not working with outlook alias on WP8

Here's my scenario:
I created an outlook alias when I got my 928 and used that to set up my phone. Everything seems to sync well and work nicely, all my contacts are downloaded (even the facebook account links in the contacts are fine), twitter, linkedin etc.
The only problem is that in the messaging app, when I swipe to "online", it says "can't connect to see who's online".
Yes, Facebook Messaging is on in settings and my status is set to available in the messaging app. Also facebook is linked to my primary account (@hotmail.com) , I checked in the site.
I've tried, toggling the status for messaging, restarting my phone etc but nothing seems to be working.
I have a 900 where I was signed in with my @hotmail.com address, and facebook chat works on that phone.

One peculiar thing is that under mail settings, my Microsoft account (which is the outlook.com alias of my primary hotmail account), has only "email" under items to sync.

Does the alias sign in work for anyone ? Any other ideas??

Did you sign in with your Outlook Alias or with your Outlook account. I would log in with your outlook account. You can change in settings on outlook.com to have all email from devices sent from an alias.

This worked perfectly. Apparently, you have to have your alias also be your primary email address as well. Excellent solution!

Hi, I meet the same issues after change primary alias from @hotmail.com to @outlook.com. Always "can't connect to see who's online". But let check again, not only Facebook, Messenger is not online too. My device: Lumia 820.

Anyone pls advise? Thanks!

Please make sure you are not signed in with your alias rather your Microsoft account.

Having that problem too. Microsoft account used is the alias (outlook). Everything ok, BUT messenger and Facebook chat not able to connect.

I was having the same issue. I clicked on the status symbol. Changed the status to offline then available again. It started working. Hope this helps!!

Can you be specific? I have tried many different solutions but with no success.

There is only one email address (Or alias) in my outlook account, and it is the primary alias.
For the sake of clarity, let's just say the email I use to login to outlook.com is fbchat@live.com

And I have also added fbchat@live.com as my facebook primary email account and I use it to login to my facebook on my windows phone.
I had a different email for facebook previously, but that didn't work either.
