Fall Creators Update screwed up my system.

I've never had any issue with Windows Updates. So when I saw that I did not have enough room on my portable drive to create a system image as a backup, I wasn't concerned.

Not only did the process take just over five hours, the end result is frustrating.
90% of the tiles that I pinned in the Start area are gone. A number of apps that I pinned to the taskbar are invisible - but when I hover the mouse over the area where they are supposed to be, there is a highlight effect and the name of the app pops up.
In my haste to fix this, I unpinned one app but that app is no longer listed in the Start menu. A whole bunch of apps are no longer listed. I am forced to search for the app, which in turn loads the app page in the Store and I launch the app from there.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. The only recourse that comes to mind is to backup all my files/downloads etc etc, reinstall the OS from scratch and reinstall/transfer everything.

I would make a directory somewhere on your drive and move all your important stuff there. Anything in the quick pinned folders like Pictures and Documents should be moved. You can also move them to onedrive and make sure they are there and in sync.

Then I would go to Updates section in settings and then recovery and reset your windows. There is an option to keep files but I would still move them over. Only your store apps will disappear.

I had this problem with Creators update. My registry must have been acting up from when I was doing insider builds. I stopped insider builds after that issue. I haven't had any problems with this latest update.

Your day is my day. Two attempt, two rollbacks. Half my apps missing in action, including the Main Microsoft ones Mail, Calendar STORE, Photos, , One Note etc. Similar taskbar transparent icons....they'll open the apps but are NOT listed in "All App" list so can't be uninstalled....and yet....the Store says they are installed so the can't be redownloaded. Oh and "Systen Retore" was disabled...so anybody who thinks they got away scott-free maybe better check that out too.

==============================

Update 10/29/2017
Success at least. Took another 2 updates attempts to get there tho. Back on CU after the 2nd rollback I rested enjoying a fine tuned machine for a week...then WU did an auto d/l and install. Same awful result. Missing apps including primary MS apps integrated into the system(mail/calendar/photos/movie-tv/groove music. Oddly Store did work this time. Spent 8hrs going thru every app trying to get them working (reset/uninstall-reinstall). Thought I was making process and got some of the primary MS apps back(did use the powershell codes solutions etc). I did uninstall old apps no longer supported(maybe a half dozen) and fixed everything I could. However ultimately I hit a wall and had to roll back again.

No sooner than 5 minutes later and the FCU started to d/l..ackkkkk! I frantically searched the settings for a way to delay/stop the FCU d/l. Got it frozen in Settings/Network-Internet/Eithernet(in my case)/Eithernet Connected(modem-router)/Set as Metered Connection (turned on). Ok that gave me breathing room. Ran CCleaner (included 'Old Window Installation'). Ran MS Disk Cleanup app .... Cleanup System Files(included Previous Windows installations and various Temp files). Then tried the Windows 10 Update Assistant again. While the WU FCU was still frozen at 62% (I know I know, possible conflict. What can I say I was at the end of my rope)...I started the W10 Update Assistant d/l. It proceeded and eventually the frozen WU FCU timed out and closed. The W10 Update Assistant FCU d/l finished and installed. With zero expectations I opened things up and lo and behold, a virtually complete working setup with apps. fewer than 4-6 apps missing (and likely unsupported ones I had uninstalled earlier). All primary MS apps there and working...even Edge. So I'm going with this setup as it's certainly workable. Only problems so far were Printer was 'off-line' but a quick troubleshoot fixed that. Also an old, old webcam didn't show video(W7 driver) I dug around and finally did a restart and it came back to life.

One issue w/ both this Desktop PC and a separate tablet are identical issues with the LockScreen. They do not show a custom(or any pic) at boot. I get the time but a blank background of custom color....no custom pic. On an awaken from sleep, the lockscreen does show with a custom pic, but not on boot-up.

So there you go, a disk cleanup and W10 Update Assistant d/l finally did it. Also uninstalling old apps/programs might also help. Good luck guys

And here I thought we were the only one to find "System Restore" disabled after three botched Creators Updates (late coming) - 3 computers - always have it enabled as its been a saviour more than once.

So needless to say, not one bit enthusiastic about the day Fall Creators Update arrives.

And as it stands now, we're pretty much done w/MSFT's update antics. While in today's world others are making the process seamless (my experiences) MSFT is making one "EARN IT!"

Maybe wait at least a week, or even two, before making such upgrades to your system. It also goes without saying that a backup is an absolute MUST.

There are SO many different configs out there that things will happen. Clean install and move on.

Wait a week! Waited months for Creators Update (public release April 2017) only to have it incapacitate 3-computers just recently that I installed it on. No it was not forced so obviously MSFT deemed them now eligible. At some point it does become a prerequisite these updates have to be installed (if eligible) leaving one with little choice, so sooner or later its gotcha.

Yes, backing up your data regularity is always a good thing. But in my honest opinion Windows 10 has made it an "ABSOLUTE MUST" now prior to ANY update.

Agree configurations differ as the day is long but my complaint is that the OS still doesn't have the "SMARTS" to figure out what works and what doesn't, and to halt an install if something doesn't meet the requirements. It just dives in feet first hoping for the best - there haven't been too many "BESTS" in my camp this year alone - Thankfully all my non-Windows devices prove updates can be successful without throwing a wrench into things at every turn, maybe one day Windows will be there too... Been toying with personal computers for nearly 31 years and don't remember it being this bad to the degree I've experienced.

Clean install and move on you say - not a problem if one has to resort to such once in a blue moon, but when it starts to become the norm that's far too much. I'm at a point now it's expected. And many of my computers have sat dormant this year because I am feed up dealing with diagnosing problems that constantly arise.

Hi !
My son had the same problem as yours after the Fall Creators Update. It seems that his apps had remained with Windows Old and had not migrated to the newer version. He uninstalled the update along with the Cumulative Update that he got just after updating to Fall Creators Update and reverted back to Creators Update .Then he installed the Fall Creators Update on his laptop through the Media tool. Everything was normal after that and next he downloaded and installed the Cumulative Update .
His laptop is working normally now.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for this - the same has happened to me, and so I've reverted back to the Creators Update. I'll have another attempt to update in a few days time. I have an Acer Aspire laptop.

I suppose the time depends on what you have on the disk and how fast it is. On both my machines, a Surface Pro 5 and a HP Z600, there's an SSD and all work/data files are on another drive. It took less than 30 minutes for both to update. Both machines initially started with a clean install of Windows 8.1 (On the Surface Windows 10 obviously).

MS cannot test every single config. But, saying that, to fail on three machines is very odd. Maybe there's something on all three machines that it doesn't like.

We have over 60 machines on this network, all different, with (so far touch wood) no issues but, again, all started with a clean install. Hopefully we'll never have issues. Fingers crossed.

I've updated today - no issues.

The only problem I had in reverting back, my favourites in Edge disappeared - and this then synced to my phone, so they are lost there as well.

Glad that your problem after updating has been resolved.
Sorry that you lost your favourites in Edge.I asked my son - he says that his favourites in Edge have not disappeared during the process of reverting back or updating. He has a HP laptop.
I hope they come back again for you or you do not have much problem adding them back again.

Edit - I noticed another new thread in W10 mobile forum of WC Forum where someone says he has lost his favourites on his mobile after updating his PC.

FCU installed, massacred the onscreen keyboard on my SP4, messed up language packs and there was nothing interesting or better that I noticed in the rest of it comparing to CU. The onscreen keyboard bugs were so bad that I decided to roll back and now I'll wait for RS4 or 5... Literally the most useless and uninspired update.

Only computer where it has caused any issues (so far at least) is my work laptop where some apps like Windows Explorer reverted to the old blocky UI:

FCU Interface change.PNG

Weird, but hardly destroying my work.

Our old super-slow laptop got it, but it failed twice using the Update Assistant and I eventually went to the Media Creation Tool instead. Even then it stalled out in the middle of a reboot once but I was able to power off and on again without losing how far it had gotten. I don't think that had anything to do with FCU; it's just slow.

No issues whatsoever with the desktop or with our good home laptop. Both fast (SSDs) and no errors.

Very unfortunate this happened. Microsoft provided a workaround to solve the missing apps problem. You can find it on windows central and many other windows blogging sites to date.

For me it is a fair warning to wait with the fall update for this reason, Ii want to trust microsoft, but this is another relevant issue, for which I just don't trust their upgrade process. So I'm glad they've supported the update delay. I wish they would also do this for windows home systems. I think this is an unacceptable bug at launch likely affecting average users, that expect the best upgrade. Each windows system may be vastly different, but for honest average users, which I consider most people, I think the update can't go forward untill the issue is resolved, even though it doesn't affect everyone. We' re all in it together or microsoft should stop supporting consumers and focus purely on business where risk is better covered.

Microsoft wants us (almost obligatory) to upgrade for the best security and performance, yet we have to accept these kinds of major issues affecting another level of safety and cost for the end user. Not a good business and service model in my view.

My laptop and surface updated with no issues but most of my store apps weren't visible on my old desktop. I downloaded and ran the Microsoft start menu troubleshooter and it found that the "Tile database is corrupt" but it wasn't able to fix it

I read that uninstalling and re-installing the app fixes the issue but I didn't have the patience to do that so I rolled back to the previous version

I also suffered the consequences of updating to Fall Creators update on my laptop. Firstly, my desktop PC which runs the insider builds stopped printing anything. I just reported the problem and waited for the fix. But even, after Fall Creators update to Redstone 4 they haven't fixed it yet. On Creators Update I was able to print documents and pdf files, but after updating my laptop to official Fall Creators update I have no device left to print my documents when required. My printer is waste until they fix it.

The upgrade went very well over here, but the install date of a lot of software got reset, so that's why I rolled all the systems back and will hold off until this issue has been resolved.

So far, my only issue has been with Panda Free antivirus in two machines running Win10. After fall update, Windows Defender alerted me that Firewall was handled by Panda and it was off. Of course, the free Panda antivirus doesn't have a firewall feature and it was previously handled by Windows Defender. It wouldn't let me switch.

To be honest, I didn't try to uninstall/reinstall Panda. I just switched to Free Bitdefender and everything seems to be working fine, Windows Defender is working as Firewall while Bitdefender is handling the AV.
