Fido on Extended Network (roaming) no background tasks!

Anyone know what could be going on?

I'm out for work trip and now my phone won't do anything in the background... notifications, connections don't stay live... ie: whatsapp doesn't stay connected (I can tell when using web whatsapp, once I go away from it on my phone, it shortly says phone not connected on web)

I have data roaming on, extended network/data roaming is covered on my plan and when I do singular things like browse web play games it works! Just that I don't get any notifications.

It's the same behaviour while on the hotel wifi which I found really odd.

I can't find any other possible setting that might be protecting me. I remember long ago something about allowing background notifications but I don't see that setting anywhere anymore.

By any chance did you turn on battery saver?

No I didn't, been rebooting and both normally and the vol down, power button hold method to no effect.

It's almost as if it's Windows protecting me or something, very often I find my roaming settings back on "don't roam", it changes by itself for some reason.

What I don't get is why I'm experiencing this while on WiFi.

The data was fine on my whole day of travel until I got into this extended zone that my plan allows. Like after landing at an airport in my regular zone, I'm normally flooded with backlogged notifications.

I am getting mail tile updates, weather app seems up to date, news...... Just not stuff like WhatsApp, skype preview has trouble opening, my game tiles... No live scores updates from sofascore.... Omg the horror! Lol

It kinda does seem like an OS/app thing but I can't nail down who's at fault.

I said background data doesn't work.. but that's not entirely true. I use My Radio Tuner Pro to listen to my sports talk stations back home and that continues to stream in the background no issue.

Whatsapp works as long as I open it... no push notifications though
Skype preview I'm having a helluva time to have it even launch successfully on roaming data or even wifi
6tag just doesn't want to open anymore (instagram is ok to launch but haven't yet tested notifications of that)
I have an old calendar app Appointile that I use only cause I like it for their "app for detailed status option on lock screen" It won't sync even when trying to manual refresh
Wechat crashes
No more tile notifications or toast notifications for games I play Alphajax, Pocket Tank and World Domination, but I can open them to and use them.

I can't seem to find a solution between the roaming data or wifi, shutting off the sims and relying only on wifi.
I find when I'm trying to use data, I end up needing to turn back "Roam" option often... sometimes multiple times to get it to stick.

Will be interesting to see what happens when I get back home or at least to my home network.

Anyone any ideas what could be happening?

And on Friday night, rebooted phone and suddenly everything working, and I get a flood of backlogged notifications.

Wish I knew what the problem was. I purposely did no app changes or software updates besides settings changes to see if when I get back to my home network it would be fine.

Didn't do anything different Friday night from the rest of the week. Sigh.... Couldn't even reproduce the problem

Not sure if related but my phone went into Rogers ext-LTE a few times the other day and I'm not even roaming! It went back to normal after about 20 mins each time.

I know FIDO and Rogers share a network, so maybe they were having some issues? My issue happened on November 6th and then again on the 7th. Hasn't happened since.

Thanks, I was hopping off Telus towers.... Interesting that you noticed it same when all the problems started for me.

Oh well back home and everything good again, but I still find it odd that my phone wasn't working right while on WiFi.

I see people complain about reliability of their phone and would've like to be able to report something if it's a problem in the OS
