Fix for wake issue not working

I installed last night and my Surface is working better than ever, it snaps awake and hasn't frozen yet. I was getting several freezes a day before, always at just the wrong time when I wanted to show a client some information.

Can't say its been the same for me. Left it at my desk at work charging with cover closed. Went to try and wake it but nothing but black screen. Had to force it down.

I guess I'll hijack this thread because I think my issue might have to do with this particular Update...

Ever since installing the most recent Patch Tuesday updates my Surface can't seem to go into connected standby when my TypeCover is connected. I tested this thoroughly: S2 is without Cover -> I connect the cover and turn the screen off by pressing the power button -> I wait for about two hours during which I do not use the S2 at all -> I open the cover and the screen is already turned on -> battery report says it had been active the whole time and chewed up around 5-6% during that time (varies obviously)

It's always the same! I basically can't use the TypeCover anymore! Imagine me leaving the thing attached over night...it would chew up like 25%!!!

Anyone else having these issues?? Like I said, I think it all started after installing the most recent Patch Tuesday updates. I never had these kinds of problems before and I've been using the S2 since late november 2013...

Yes. Today I took my S2 to work with the Type 2 cover attached in a moderately snug sleeve. I needed to use it about 3:30 and pulled it out of the sleeve to discover that it had been on the entire time and had used up about 2/3rds of the battery. It was also quite warm and was initially unresponsive. Before the most recent update the S2 was quite stable and well-behaved. Since the update is all that changed, I'm inclined to believe that it is responsible.

Okay so I'm not the only one experiencing these issues...

BTW: being the OCD guy that I am (lol), I kept testing this yesterday. It really does happen always. It's not a oh-well-it-happens-once-in-a-while thing. One time the thing went completely crazy: when I opnened the cover I was immediately presented with the start screen (yes, no lockscreen first...that's the problem) and all tiles were missing. It just showed my start screen background and that was it! I used the search function to get to the desktop and when I returned from there, all tiles had reappeared...still damn strange though!

Microsoft really needs to do something about this! It renders the Type Cover completely unuseable!

I'm having the same issue here with my wife's Surface 2 and the Type Cover, the device doesn't go into connected standby. I also noticed that sometimes the back camera is randomly on, I can tell without opening the cover because the little light next to the camera is on. I guess a simple solution for now is to just not keep the Type Cover attached while you aren't using the device. I would be curious to hear if anyone can come up with a fix for this.

So this really does seem to be a widespread issue...
In Addition to you guys facing the same problem, my mother called me today and asked about the problem so she is having it as well with her S2. Moreover she told me that the problem started to occur yesterday after she had done a reboot and some updates that had been in the installing queue since last patch tuesday had finally been installed. I don't think that is a coincidence lol...
As far as I remember, last patch tuesday included an update that was supposed to fix some bugs that had to do with the S2 not turning on when pressing the power button. Maybe the guys over at MS were a bit too enthusiastic about fixing this thing and decided to just keep the S2 powered on all the time :-p

okay so now this is interesting? you responded to my query in a thread about battery life earlier and i *think* i may well be seeing this as the main concern for battery drain. Typically, i will press the power button 'off' before closing the cover (and placing in a case to take it to and from work etc). Naturally i am assuming the thing should be truly in standby, allowing quick resuming (which it is) but NOT using much juice?.which it seems to be 7-9% p hour with NO USE. :( maybe i am being unrealistic with the percentage loss, but I have indeed experienced a warmer device when its NOT being used for hours and did even have the main camera mysteriously turn on in my bag for 4 hours once that i still can't explain.

All since the last Updates on Patch Tuesday. Ironically, i am not having the crash experiences from the home button, that behaviour is as expected and seems 'fixed'. I always leave the house at 99% batt and normally find the thing at 70/80% when i wake it up again on my lunchbreak some 4ish hours later. what to do?!!!

PS : how are we defining 'connected standby'? is this a sleeping machine, on WiFi (w/background tasks periodically running etc) or a different state? Just checking so I'm on the same page here!

Let me try to draw a conclusion here:

1. We all are 99% sure that this started after last patch tuesday
2. It only happens when the cover is attached => detaching it is a temporary "fix" but not something any of us want to live with, obviously...

Now I'll try to answer your questions:

" what to do?!!!" -> Point 2. answers this question. Of course we shall all hope that MS notices this issue and releases a real fix soon...

"how are we defining 'connected standby'?" -> we do not define it at all, MS does ;-)
Connected standby means that pretty much everything is in a very low power state, except the wifi is still on (that's why they call it connected standby). The S2 knows two power states: Active and Connected Standy. The problem we all have is that the S2 doesn't go into CS anymore. With the cover attached it stays in the "Active" mode which means that the CPU draws much more power etc.
You can check the different phases in the batteryreport....usually it obviously toggles between Active and Connected Standby because you either use it or you don't. But with this bug it pretty much stays Active all the time which drains the battery...
Well that was longer than I planned...I hope everything is clear now haha ;-)

Cleared up yeah lol! Thanks for the answer(s) there. Sounds pretty conclusive that I am experiencing this issue too. Are we aware yet that this has been raised with MS via their support/answers forum? Seemingly its a widespread issue. The next Patch Tues is, if I recall correctly, W8.1 Update 1...so..I wonder if that will improve things? There are reports of battery improvements in the leaked versions doing the rounds.

I just posted in their Forums: After last patch tuesday (3/11/2014): Surface not - Microsoft Community

Feel free to contribute there and help spread the news so that MS hears us. Thanks!

As an experiment, I took my Surface 2 into work today with the Type cover 2 DETATCHED and would you believe it.. I'm only down to 93% from 99% at 8.45 am 5 hours ago- id normally be sitting at 70/80%! So, yeah this is definitely the root of the battery drain I'm seeing. I will lend my voice to the support pages too. Hope this is fixed asap!!
