There's no taskmanager in Windows Phone 8, that I'm aware of.

Aside from holding the back button down and exiting all programs, is there a taskmanager somewhere to view any memory hogs/terminate unneeded services?

Lately it's been taking a bit longer than normal to fire up apps like Facebook Messenger and things like WhatsApp have been crashing.

Reboot. That's the simplest way to clear your memory.

I mean, a simple reboot solves a lot of problems in Windows Phone.

But after some time the problem will re-occur. Is there a more stable option to speed it up?

Considering that Windows Phone 8.1 now does stuff like full Windows 8.1 (i.e. "closing" an app will only send it to the background, as far as I know), and we really don't have full control over the OS, we don't really have a way to clear memory.

Besides, the problems in your case sound like they're the apps themselves. I say reinstall and see if the problems occur again.
