GAL on exchange 2003 with winpho 7

The company I work at is still using Exchange 2003 server for email. Has anyone gotten the global address book to work with that version? Or are we on 2007 or 2010 for full compatibility?
That and pop-up blocker are my only two concerns so far.

MS Knowledge Base: You cannot search the Global Address List with Windows Phone 7 when connecting to Exchange Server 2003. They promise a fix in a future update.
