Gmail sync issues

Suddenly I've been experiencing sync issues on my primary Gmail account. Started a couple of days ago. I had several emails Wednesday afternoon that I didn't see until Thursday morning. Frequently when I open the mail app there appears an error. Any recommended procedures to remedy?
