I'm about 98% sure that this is because of Skydrive. Who's going to use SkyDrive if they have a sd card.
Now before anyone says "well what about the Ativ?" I think Samsung had a little more leverage than Nokia. Nokia NEEDS Microsoft right now. Samsung has Android on lock. If Microsoft told them "no removable memory" they could have just said "Pass, we've got Android anyways. We dont really need you Microsoft"
If this was about SkyDrive, the 820 wouldn't have an SD card slot either. But it does. This is about the Lumia 920's unibody case and nothing more.
And Samsung isn't going to tell Microsoft to go pound sand. Samsung has a sizable laptop and desktop business, remember? Even if they abandon Windows Phone, they're still a major partner with Microsoft.
