i noticed all of a sudden that the app screen started having alphabet shortcuts. is that just because it's a longer list now? or did an update happen without me knowing?

Longer list caused it.

I really enjoy the shortcuts. Tapping on any letter brings you to the full alphabet. Much faster than searching. Nice touch IMO. Fastest app list of any mobile OS, bar none!

Yeah once you get to 42 or some such number those show up to make it easier to jump to other letters quicker than just scrolling a long list.
