When setting up your home surveillance system, it's possible to use an SD card and rely on footage being saved locally on each camera. Most vendors have mobile apps that can be used to set up each camera and view/save footage. My preferred method is to use the best NAS for home surveillance and PoE switch to make it easier. This guide will run you through picking the best network switch.

This article seems to not have experience in what what a field tech needs that works on ip cameras

I don't believe security camera switches were well researched on this article or know of what happens in the field for technicians. Yes power is important for the ports but there are additional options/features available on other manufacturers out there which blow some of the ones mentioned out of the water.

I personally have used Netgear, Engenius, TP-Link, Zyxel, etc. & recently have come across Zyxel's GS1300 switches. These switches not only have a good amount of power but they have the ability to power a camera 250 meters away. That's over 800 feet to power an ip camera! We have stumbled across situations where the runs do need to be far from the switch. This happens due to lack of power in the area or even the lack of structures. We recently deployed this switch in a parking lot setting where the run was around 750 feet from the switch. We were able to increase the power of the port to power the camera and boom the camera came up and is still up to this day.

An additional feature for ip camera installers which helps a lot is the ability to reboot the port remotely or even automatically. The Zyxel GS1300 has this ability to either reboot the camera when it drops automatically or you can even connect it to their cloud which gives the ability to view and reboot ports remotely. This is HUGE for ip camera installers and saves the time to drive a truck to the site.

It seems this article only touches on minor features which most switches are already providing today and doesn't understand which a real work ip camera installer goes through or requires.

A decent combined 8 port Gigabit unmanaged switch (4 POE+ and 4 Non POE) is the D-Link DGS-1008P which has a with collective power budget of 68 watts.

Compared to the 5 Port TP-Link 65 watts collective POE+ budget for the 4 POE+ Ports (according to their website), the D-link DGS-1008P would be a better buy if found at the same price as the TP-Link (especially if it's cheaper, I bought mine for £40 last year Feb).

I have had multiple TP-Link products (routers, Wifi cards, wifi adapters) and the only thing that has lasted more than a year is a TP-link 100 mbps switch I bought for £7 about 5 years ago lol... it was supposed to be a temp place holder lol and yet the more expensive TP-Link products have not lasted... :grincry:.
