Over on cnet and iVerge, there are divisions about the Holographicness (?!) of this new device. Some say it it VR and some not. What do you guys think?

I think it's more Augmented Reality than anything else. It's not VR because VR completely covers your eyes giving you a completely virtual reality. I still love it and hope I can afford it when it comes out.

well, it's more high end augmented reality than virtual reality. guess people are wanting more like sci-fi movie holograms than something using a headset, but it's a GREAT start.

edit: and phirefly beat me to it! stupid job getting in the way of my reply

I'd say it's not holographic just because holograms are typically thought if as images separate from your eyes. The HoloLens is altering what your eyes see, a layer over your vision.

I think what's interesting is the headset *could* be used for VR (because it can block out backgrounds with projected images that appear solid), but programmers will probably get more out of it doing AR.

if 3D is acceptable with multiple panes

Then a image presented within a real 3D space is probably truer to its name than 3D.
