How can I get my front camera working?

This is not a new problem but I haven't managed to find a solution yet. What's the deal with the front facing cameras of Lumias? I have a 830 and had 920. It started happening after the Amber update, lots of post-processing in photos, very bad colors. And now with Lumia Camera and Denim it is even worse! The images are very grey and have very muted colors. Using the default camera app is also not a great solution because, compared to front facing camera photos taken with, for example a Samsung phone, photos are still terrible and with bad colors.

It is crazy but, it is actually much better to take a printscreen when in the camera app than taking a photo. How is it possible that front cameras of Lumias were better in 2012 than in 2015?! Anybody has some solution or trick to adress this?

Please ensure that the glass covering of the front facing camera is clear of smudges, finger prints or any other foreign substance that may otherwise obstruct the flow and saturation of light into the camera. This applies to all other cameras as well, especially those with small lenses.

It's a 1MP piece of crappola front facing camera...'nuff said. My old 810 has a better front facing camera than my 830 but suffers from the dreaded green hue. New 840 will have a 5MP front facing camera, MS listens -a bit too late tho'

Hmm, the OP may try a different Camera App that has saturation controls, such as ProShot.

I've tried the L1020's front facing camera and the 1.2 MP camera takes acceptable photos. Under low light, the quality of the image quickly deteriorates (becomes dull, unsaturated, though shadow-recovery is a bit more than what I expected in very low lighting conditions), but under bright light it takes "good" photos - as with all other normal phone cameras.

Here's a follow up question for the OP: were the photos of concern taken under low light?
