How can I increase the time before my screen times out?

Need a little more time before screen shuts off

Hi, I'm a new guy. So forgive potential dumb question...

When I make a phone call, the screen goes dark. Sometimes I need to be able to do things on that screen; like when I've called the electric company to report an outage: "Please input the phone number associated with your account." I have to hit the power button twice to bring the screen back up, then put in the phone number. Then I get, "Our records show your account is located at ___________, if the service address where you are reporting and outage please hit the pound key." By then the screen has gone dark again so again I have to hit the power button twice. Is it possible to make the screen stay alive a little longer?

Actually quickly hitting the power button is one of the solutions.. Tho when you move the phone away from your ear, it should automatically light up again..

Reasons for this not happening: screen protector might be blocking the sensor; sensor might be defective; maybe dirt on the glass directly above the sensor
