How can I solve these Facebook Messenger problems?

1. The Messenger app on my Microsoft Lumia 640 XL keeps on saying Connecting... for a long time with orange colored background on the top. However, it ends when it gets connected but takes a long time even though I have a fast WiFi connection. This happens when
(a) I open the fresh instance of the Messenger.
(b) The opened Messenger is reopened when I switch between the apps.

2. The Messenger doesn't seem to run in the background because it doesn't have the allowed/not allowed option to run in the background like other apps. However it does shows me this way. "App in background: < 1%."

3. I receive notifications even when I select turn off for 1h or turn off until 8am.

Thanks... and I see the title got updated. Sorry, I don't do FB so I have no idea. At first it was unclear to me which App, there are so many Messenger services these days.
