how do i backup my ROM?

I am about to update my 1020 but I want to backup my ROM incase something happens. Can anybody help me!

If it's a normal update (Cyan, WinPhone 8.1) the backup mechanism triggered by the update is very good - it restores everything back to normal (other than sync settings on email & new apps as part of update) ~~ 98% normal.

If your update goes south, you still have the backup - just don't sign back in to your phone until you're ready to restore it (you have it where you want it)..

You can't backup a ROM the way you're thinking.

I don't think yo ueven have to, you could redownlaod it right? (asking other people instead of OP here)

Yep
Nokia Software Recovery or NSU for retail will wipe and reinstall the last ROM for the particular model connected to a PC.
