How do I insert/delete character(s) in the middle of a long string?

Suppose I typed a message containing a long string of characters, like Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious & then decide that I need to insert or delete character(s) in the middle of that string.

How do I do that w/o retyping the entire string? In other words, how do I position the cursor in the middle of a word?

Simply tap in the middle of the word: The cursor moves to where you tapped.

That doesn't work on my phone. Tapping in the middle selects the entire word.

On WP 8.1, tap a blank spot to get a cursor... Hold the dot on the bottom of the cursor and slide it where needed.
