How do I resolve a winword.exe application error?

When attempting to open up word or office etc it says updating office, please wait then it tells me the application was unable to start correctly (0x0000142) and I cannot access any of my documents. Tried restoring to an earlier date but this has not resolved the issue, presumably because the files are protected?

Did you try uninstalling Office, then restart, then reinstall it again?
