file transfer to a non windows device via NFC

I use a windows phone 8.1,desktop & laptop, yea I'm a type of guy who always look for many devices instead of a jack of all traits.

I recently purchased a camera that supports wifi & nfc connectivity. (Sony DSC-WX350) if u need to know.

I was hoping to share my photos across my windows phone but surprise surprise my phone said sorry 'fool' I don't recognize this file.

what was really funny is that the camera was able to transfer files to an android device or an IOS (which doesn't have NFC by the way) effortlessly.

Is it just me or is it too much to ask for an app to transfer pictures?

humor me pls,

windows user
since 1997.

First, to be clear. NFC only allows for connectivity to happen faster, it is not the protocol of transfer.

Though WP supports WiFi direct transfer it is not implemented yet on the phone. Since Sony and every other camera manufacture don't make apps for WP it's likely you'll continue to have this issue until WP gets WiFi direct working correctly.

The NFC implementation on Windows phone doesn't play well with the standards used by the other manufacturers.

As N_LaRUE said above, NFC only assists in pairing and initiating the transfers. Mostly the transfers take place via Bluetooth.

You transferred a file via NFC to an iOS device? Congratulations. You did something no one has ever done before.

I think there is a missunderstanding of what wifi direct is. Wifi direct works on windows phone. But wifi direct has absolutly nothing to do with file transfers. It only allows you to make an ad hoc network connection with another wifi direct enabled device without the need of additional network infrastructure in form of an access point.
If you want to do file transfer throught wifi direct you have to implement a protocol on top of wifi direct to do the job. It does not magically happen. Just like miracast is it's own protocol that works over wifi direct.

There is not really a standard way of doing that though. Android has "Beam" and Apple has airdrop for instance. Samsung is the only manufacturer that offers such an app on their windows phones that is compatible with their android phones.

Sadly microsoft does not offer such a thing on Windows Phone that would at least work between their own phones. Theoretically an app developer could create something like this as an app that utilizes wifi direct and implements its own file transfer protocol.

I think the best way for MS would be to implement file transfer in a compatible way with android.

Thanks for the info. I did know all that but I wasn't going to get into a long discussion about it. I have a Canon camera that works similarly to the Sony. It uses it's own app (on Android in this case) to work with the files via WiFi, which would be the best way for things to be done with WP. That's why I mentioned apps.

It's a great thing to have and I'd really like to see these camera manufacturers supporting WP but that doesn't seem to be happening.

Re: file transfer to a non windows device via NFC

yea its just a matter of compatibility & I'm sure many of us WP users would agree that many sought after apps for some reason does not support the windows platform.

how many times have we purchased a gadget or a device to find that apps are only available for apple & android devices?

unless MS has plans to starts making other devices compatible to WP in future I am missing the point here.

Re: file transfer to a non windows device via NFC

Sure there's an app. You mentioned NFC, which the iPhone doesn't have. (the iPhone 6 has NFC only for apple pay)

With the app you don't need NFC, he did mention the iPhone didn't have NFC btw. There's a connection made by WiFi to the camera. The NFC function is probably for use with Sony phones or other Android devices.
