How do I turn off media+apps sounds?

how to turn off media+apps sounds

I used to just press the volume up or down keys for my ringtone volume and that was that. Now when I press either key a little window slides down showing two bars, one for ringtone and one for media+apps. It never used to show this on my Lumia 435(8.1). It just showed in the top left corner of the home screen the ringtone level which simply changed accordingly with the up or down keys. No surprise windows. Is this something to do possibly with an update? Or could I unknowingly have pressed a feature that in effect shows this new(to me) window? I prefer the side hard keys for the ringtone volume alone.

Windows Phone has always worked like this. Whenever you're inside an application that makes noise, the volume slider that shows is the slider that controls volume for just apps and media (like music). Whenever you're outside the applications or you're in an application that doesn't make noise (like Messaging) the slider that shows is for ringtones and notifications. This behavior has been consistent for a long time. If you want to see both sliders, tap the little arrow on the volume control pane that slides down when you hit one of the physical volume keys.
