I want to know, from someone who owns a HTC Windows M8 how it compares to the Lumia phone you had before. And I don't care one little bit about the camera, what I want to know is how it compares on a day to day use, like texting, answering calls , making calls, surfing the Web, playing a game, How long does your battery last. How does it feel in your hand. Too many of you get all caught up in new updates and how wonderful the camera is, and I like updates as much as the next guy but I buy my phone for how it works now not later. I love the Windows OS but I am really tired of the slab style Lumia phones. Do you miss the Lumia apps or do the HTC apps work as well , Let me know.

My boyfriend returned the M8 for the Icon as he didn't really notice anything overall that was BETTER just different on the M8 and he missed the Nokia support and camera and all that good stuff..;...Some people on the comments from some articles do miss the Nokia apps and miss Nokia features and what not. While you may not be concerned with updates, it's still a good idea to be at least curious as to whether your OEM is going to get them out in a speedy time OR not.

From what the majority of M8 owners claim, it performs well and launches things faster than the Lumia(though the Lumia isn't laggy by any means and from using an M8, I didn't see much of a difference in speed) and the hardware is nice as well.

Most people here will tell you it is loads better than a Lumia, but in reality it really isn't. It's not WORSE than a Lumia, it's comparable.

To be impartial, if you really don't care about the camera(shock) or HTC questionable support and you like the phone, go for it. It is a good phone for those who might want something other than a Lumia. I'd much rather someone go to HTC, unfortunately, over leaving the platform entirely.

This video sums up the differences and similarities between the two phones(and negates the "M8 is faster because it has 801 vs the lumia on 800 processor" bs argument since the Professional reviewer himself says in certain cases, the M8 is faster and the icon is faster.)

Of course for me, I always recommend Lumia regardless. I am not bothered by the design(and I don't see it a slab really). Personally, I don't like the rounded edges of the M8. While both look like premium products, the Icon looks better to me with it's edges.

but yeah this video I watched yesterday really showcased that the Lumia Icon AND the M8 are nearly the same phone with a few key differences.

Also wanted to add

While I don't necessarily agree, I could see someone with a 2012 or 2013 windows phone moving to a M8 but Moving from an icon to m8 or a m8 to an icon seems to be kind of a waste simply because as the video above points out, they basically do the same exact things overall with each differing in different areas(HTC m8 has audio down and Lumia has the camera).

so I guess it sort of confuses me when I see people more or less replace either phone with the other UNLESS they were unhappy with it.

I had an Icon for six months before getting the M8. Loved the icon, love the M8 much more. It is as fine for texting, calling, receiving, web surfing, gaming as the icon was/is. Battery lasts me all day and more. I charge nightly. Like the feel better than the icon. The icon IMO was more slab like and had severe corners on it, felt not as good in hand, while the M8 is sleeker by far, feels much better in hand and the corners of the M8 are nicely rounded. The metal body is very nice, cool to the touch but slippery to hold. I got a very thin soft , matte black case for mine which enhances the looks even more and prevents slippage while holding it. I'm with you regarding updates, the M8 is ready to go right out of the box with the smoothest 8.1 experience ever. If it never got an update it wouldn't matter to me as this device is fantastic as is. Any updates would be extra gravy on top. As for nokia apps, I have here drive, here maps and that's about all i really cared about. They carry over fine to the M8 and can be had at the store. The HTC cam is fine for my outdoor shots and I use the 3rd party "pro shot" anyway which is even better. It shoots fast unlike the icon which is a nice plus in certain situations. After rocking the icon for those six months and thinking I'd died and gone to nokia heaven, when I got the M8 I realized what sweet was and put the icon up for sale the next day as I knew there'd be no going back to it.
Devices and brands are subjective to the eye of the beholder of course. I've always been a Nokia fan for years, but also liked HTC devices over the years as well and had many. Either device is a nice choice, however take into account the lesser battery, problematical WiFi and BT for some on the icon and then go pick up an M8. If you get it from verizon you have those 14 days to test drive.
EDIT: Somehow I missed your saying your on AT&T, but they still have the 14 day return policy. What other options are there in regards to WP on AT&T? 1520 is way big, but fine if your ok with a phablet sized behemoth. 1020 is getting pretty long in the tooth. I think they M8 would be your logical choice unless they had another newer Lumina and they don't. 930 is the icon in GSM clothing, some use that on AT&T.

Had both, have the M8 now.. There are two things that are better on the lumias 1. The screens are way better cause of the clearblack displays 2. the camera... I still choose the m8 over the lumias tho. Its a better looking phone also the ir remote, dot view case, and the high quality speakers aren't to shabby either.

I,m on AT&T so the Icon is not an option for me.

The 1520 is and the 830 is :) I've been rocking a 1520 for a year. Which is a first for me simply because ice never kept a phone for longer than a few months. This is one boss phone. For those complaining about the corners on the icon, I rarely hold my phone by its corner so that is irrelevant and there are no Wi-Fi issues on most icons and the battery is great. Keep in mind wireless charging is on the icon/1520 but not the m8, which I think is a cool feature to have.

Dot view is cool but that's why we have glance.

I've never owned a Nokia device (I came over from Blackberry) so I really don't have a reference point. When I set out to get a new Windows phone, the M8 was the newest device on Verizon for this OS. I've seen the comparison video and really don't think that you can go wrong with either device.

I have an Icon and the m8, and if you don't care for the camera than go with the m8. Build quality is great, battery is outstanding and its as fast as they get. I used it for 2 months before going back to the Icon last week to take advantage of the camera.

Another nice thing is that its compatible with all the android m8 hardware accessories, which is an issue we have with Lumias since there are so many carrier variants in the US.

I may switch back, but the camera is pretty important to me, though the Icon needs Cyan or Denim badly.

Other than the camera only advantage the 1520/Icon/930 has at the moment is that its been announced to support "Hey Cortana" touchless search support by the end of the year, nothing yet on the HTC One though the hardware is there
