How is Skype used?

I've never used Skype before, so I have no idea how it is used.

I would be using Desktop or Modern (Windows 8) Skype, since I never used Skype in the past and Microsoft Account cannot be linked for Skype on WP7.x.

Does it have to be video-based, or can I turn off my webcam and just talk?

How will I know when someone contacts me?

Does it have a typing option like the old Windows Live Messenger?

I've looked at the website, but I'm pretty clueless.

Yes you can turn the video off and just talk.

If you have it active, it will notify you. If you have it off, you'll get a message that someone tried to contact you.

There's a chat option.

By active does that mean I'd need to have Skype open in a tab in my browser if I'm using a desktop version of Skype (Windows or Linux)?

If I'm running Windows 8 and don't have Skype open in desktop browser or aren't even using a browser, will I get a notification via the modern tile as long as my status is available?

It has it's own window, you don't need the browser, except to make phone calls from numbers on the net.

Once you open Skype you get a notification.

I got Skype to work. What I should have done before trying to use it was to use the test to check my speakers and microphone settings. I have 3 different selections for both speakers and microphone and had picked the wrong ones, so there was no sound.

Now I have the proper settings, so I shouldn't have to call back next time due to lack of sound issues.

This reminds me of one time when I was chatting with my cousin and I had the audio output to go through my headphones. So I was wondering why there wasn't any sound and I was telling him to check his audio settings. I was essentially blaming him. So you can bet when I found out it was on my end, I never said a word of that moment to anyone :winktongue:

Good thing you got it working
