How long did you have spinning cogs during Denim Update?

I'm getting concerned that there is a problem with my update. I've had spinning cogs for an hour, and I'm having flashbacks to what drove me to the 928 in the first place. My 822 spin for 18 hours before I took it in.

How long is too long on the spinning cogs? How long did people have them on screen during their updates? I feel like I saw someone say their entire update was done in 30 minutes. Do I try to fix this at home or go to Verizon tonight? They tend to know next to nothing about Windows Phones so I'm thinking see if I can do it myself if I want it working tonight (which I do).

Very annoyed by this issue as I'm running regular WP8, patiently waited for 8.1/Denim, resisted the DP and still having a problem. I can't win. Should have waited til after Christmas I guess.

I know during a regular update on my 928 at some point I had gears spinning too long. Did a soft reset I think and it pretty much finished right up.

Not that it will be guaranteed, but hey why not? *

* your phone explodes and for some reason they deny a warranty claim

Not really sure what to think at this point. The good news is that my phone is on and operating, which is all I need at this point. But it hasn't updated to 8.1/Denim. It was on the spinning cogs for 1 hour and 40 minutes. When it came fully back on, it said my phone was ready for an update and that it would be coming but if I didn't want to wait, I should go into settings, etc. A minute later, it said I had an update waiting.

So, not totally clear on what happened at this point, I remember vaguely that people upgrading through DP had to prepare their phones with one update before adding the 8.1, but not sure that's what's going on here. We'll see, but I'm going to wait until Friday before I try updating again. Christmas will be over, things will be a bit less pressing all the way around if I don't have the phone available for 3 hours again (data migration took an hour).

For anyone who runs into this problem, the spinning cogs lasted for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Yeah. I was in the process of downloading the NCU to get rid of the cogs and just be able to turn it on. So, if it takes a while, be patient, give it at least 2 hours to see if things can move forward on their own. I'm on the "Almost Done" screen and it's migrating my data. All in all, it sucks that it made me panic and that it's taking forever, but the upside is that my data wasn't wiped

Overall took hours to migrate to 8.1, and cogs were spinning for a long time. I was going straight from Lumia Black 8.0, so idk if most people already had PFD and that helped.

To prevent update troubles like the spinning wheel issue......remove before you update your sd card. Somehow it's stagnated with removable storages.

I wondered that as well, I'm also upgrading from Lumia Black 8.0 and I know most on here already had 8.1 and were mostly grabbing the firmware.

I'll keep the tip in mind about an SD card. The 928 doesn't have one, but hopefully the next one I get will have one, so still good to know.

In terms of available storage. I had just under 5 GB free, but since you mentioned it, I can easily delete about 1.3 GB before I try again tomorrow. Maybe it won't make a difference, but if the extra room could serve to somehow help things, no problem and I can add that media back later on.

Smooth that was not, but the I now have 8.1 Denim running on my phone. I do think there may have been another update the other day in preparation for the big one because the size of that download versus today's were definitely different, the other was much, much smaller. Also, this time, I got a message saying it was ready to update to 8.1 and the time table (15-30 minutes - I wish! - versus 5-10 min the other day) and information they had on screen were much different.

It took about 4.5 hours total because I had to do it twice today, the first time it took a long time to download and prepared to install, started updating with the spinning cogs, and then I got a message that it could not update and a 80188308 error code. So, I tried it again, had to download and prepare all over again, which takes a while. Then started the spinning cogs, but this time it kept going. That took about 1.5 hours on the spinning cogs at that 5-10% progress, after that, the progress bar moved steadily, and then the steps to prepare the phone and the data migration. I knew things were better this time as soon as the additional steps to prepare started because the wifi was not in the same location so clearly changes were implemented.

Whew! Thrilled I'm finally on 8.1, there's a ton here to explore and I'm sure I'll love it all, but wouldn't mind if they figured out a smoother process in the future, one where it isn't so prone to feeling like everything has gone horribly wrong. But listen, still an improvement over when my 822 just stayed happily on spinning cogs forever and I had to take it in to Verizon. So, progress in that sense. Hopefully 10 is going to be an even better update process.

Thanks to those who posted and offered suggestions.
