How long does a hard reset take?

Never do a hard reset without 4-5 hours of open time and at least a cold 6 pack of your favorite adult beverage nearby.

My Lumia 520 was at the gears for more than 2 hours when I read the posts about a soft reset (Vol down and Power button) and tried it. The gears dissapeared and my phone is now stuck on the NOKIA display fo the past 30 min. Is this alright? Should I try taking out the battery and putting it back in or something? Please help !
