Go to Settings --> Phone Update --> Check for Updates. If an update is available for your region/carrier, you can install it over wifi.

So do the phone update procedure in the first reply.

The Preview for Developers is an early access program you can enroll in for free if the prospect for more updates, sooner, at the risk of some issues is for you.
Example: Right now, for your phone, and mine, the official release is 8.1. However 8.1 Update 1 is already available via that channel.

You can install it ONLY over WiFi due to file size... WP has a built in limit on file size allowed over cellular data.
