I had a hard time finding an easy way to backup my phone in case I do something stupid down the line and want to restore back to here (with my device fully unlocked)

But... I accidentally found this method! Hopefully it helps some of you out as well. I can easily make backups anytime I feel like now...

1) Download this file: WP7_Update_Cab_Sender.zip
2) Unzip and run it. Select 'B' for send Cabs to device and BACKUP
3) Watch it do its thing. It will backup and then error-out after it figures out you don't need the firmware update (if you do then no big deal, it'll update form Samsung's servers and you'll be good to go).

You should see the new update date in your Zune client, and you can copy the backup from this location to a safe place:
C:\Users\[Windows Login Name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update\

Can you restore the backup to a different phone that is the exact same model? My screen broke, and I have a replacement phone. I don't want to lose my messaging history...

No, it isn't possible, and yes, it's not a good thing in my opinion.

It would be nice if you could. They could attach the backup to a Live ID and require a password? I'm guessing you can't because of piracy concerns.

Question for others:
Can you insert an sd card (which requires a restore) and then restore from a backup that didn't have all that memory? I'm thinking no... boooooo... lol

I keep getting a 403 error trying to get the zip file above. And a bit of a noob question, how do you restore your image to the phone wants it is backed up?

Provably something on your end messing it up.
