How to convert written text to typed text when using surface pen?

I have the latest redstone build installed on my surface 3. I also have the pen and I though of testing the new inking experience. I've never used the pen before so this is all new to me

One thing I thought would be available is converting handwritten text to typed text. But I haven't been able to figure this out on how to do it. I've tried onenote app and onenote 2016 program and also one or two of the inking apps

Do I have to teach the system to learn my handwriting or is it automatic or is there some setting I need to change?

Or is hand writing recognition not available?

I watched a youtube video about surface pro 4 yesterday and if you're writing in OneNote you just have to select the hand written text and then go to draw menu where you select convert. Maybe it works different on surface pro 3.

I think I had tried that but no difference - let me look for that video though
