After following the steps outlined in this thread, I was able to upgrade to Redstone and had been running on 10 for the past few months. Unfortunately, I had to use the recovery tool on my HTC One m8 after the latest fast ring build didn't work (back to 8.1 :crying:). To get back to 10, I've tried following the steps on the Russian site linked in the other post, but I keep getting an error:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Tools\bin\i386>iutool.exe -V -p "C:\cabs"

(IUTool Version: 13:54:04/Apr 29 2015)

Any ideas about how to solve this issue or another workaround?

Yeah I'm not sure on that bud as I don't plan on doing any fast ring builds on my only mobile phone. I'm staying on release preview for the foreseeable future. RS2 might not even work with this method for all we know.

(first thing first sorry for my English)
i`m just install windows 8.1 to find the way of getting update to windows 10 from 8.1 (its so simple)

you just need developer unlock your phone (use windows WP8.1 SDK)
deploy CustomWPSystem_0601 (i just use WPV XAP Deployer 2.0)
copy CustomPFD_0003 to your sd card (this is the only working version as far as i know)
install preview for developers from store
replace preview for developers with CustomPFD (by using CustomWPSystem)
open CustomPFD and change your registry

you can see it on this video

So... How is it?

I have the last W10M release preview I could get before Microsoft decided my phone was not worthy of updates. In general terms it works great, some issues when opening the camera app but I can live with that. The other problem is that battery is noticeable worse than with 8.1. I would like that to improve.
Does this redstone thing improves battery? Also. After installing W10, I never did a hard reset. Do you think is necessary? For improving phone performance? Will that process take my phone back to 8.1?
Thanks!

it's completely worth the effort. the last build of windows 10 mobile for our phone was really unstable for me. a lot of failed sms messages. battery usage out of control. having to reboot all the time. switched it to redstone and much more reliable of a phone. still not fantastic but completely worth the effort to switch.

So, unfortunately after updating the phone to the latest windows 10, my phone isn't working with cellular data. On the settings page it shows I have LTE, but on start up page I have no LTE listed. Data over cellular not functioning. Phone is otherwise working fine. This also happened previously when I hard reset my HTC m8 after updating to Redstone 14356. When I restored to Windows 8.1 with windows device recovery tool data was fine. Now after updating to 10 no data. Any suggestions??> thanks.!

Solved my own problem. I put the sim card in after update to 10. Restored to 8.1 with sim card installed, then went through update to 10 and now radio data working fine.

For a long time I have been wanting to do this, but I was just able to do it now. I came across issue where interop crashed after selecting platform. I was able to workaround it by doing the following:

When you are in the Registry Browser and have gone all the way to SYSTEM, before selecting Platform, select Jump To... and type Platform on the text field above. Press enter. At this point, it will not occur anything. Then, you can press platform and be able to go to next folder DeviceTargetingInfo. After that, follow the first steps.

That seems to have fixed my crashing issue. My phone is currently downloading the new update.

thanks that worked. I'm downloading now. I'm starting with the "Preview" build and then move up to "slow" then possibly "fast". People on the post have said R2 is not stable yet so I don't want to go that far yet.

I have instructions but it is only in Russian now https://1drv.ms/f/s!AjtKMFTjb-vjjeEPAv6nUTGbS_-Ujg
I need to know how to upgrade Lumia 630DS now to Redstone, this phone 512MB RAM. Any guesses?

Instructions (russian)
This method at the top of this thread seems doesn't work on 512Mb devices, I've tried to change these regkeys but phone still says 'up to date'

If anyone is stuck with a one M8 on 8.1 and would like to upgrade to 10, I got this working a few weeks back (I meant to reply sooner, but things have been crazy at work). I am back on the release preview ring and am currently running 10.0.14393.221. I only know of two issues. First, trying to access the camera from the lock screen doesn't do anything. I feel the phone vibrate, so I know it's registering the tap, but nothing happens. Second, headphones no longer seem to work. :crying:

Anyway, here are the steps (in English :winktongue:) to do the upgrade:

  1. Use Windows Device Recovery Tool (download here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=522381 and FAQ here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12379/windows-10-mobile-device-recovery-tool-faq) to get back to 8.1 (if not already) - you'll need to connect your phone to the PC you installed WDRT
  2. Go to this site: 14219-10586 htc w8 tmous (0P6B140) - Pastebin.com and grab all of the .cab file urls. These urls are from this thread: [W10M BUILDS] Update links collection (cab-f… | Windows 10 Development and Hacking)
  3. This is the part that sucks... Paste each url into a browser to download the file (you should end up with 47 files) - on a side note, if anyone doesn't want to do this, I could paste a link to a zipped folder with all of the files
  4. Place all the files into a folder named "cabs" in your C: drive (ex: C:\cabs)
  5. Download and install the Windows Driver Kit from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=526733
  6. Open command prompt (windows + R then "cmd") and enter this command (places you in the proper folder to execute the next command): cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Tools\bin\i386
  7. While your phone is connected to the PC, run the command: iutool.exe -V -p "C:\cabs" - it will take a while to execute as it transfers, then installs all 47 files. I think it took about 75-90 minutes for me.
  8. Once that finishes, you'll be on build 10586.11

Once you've completed those steps, you can follow the directions posted by benj1091 at the beginning of the thread to change the registry (via Interop Tools) to match a Lumia 735. If you want, you can then (or before) install Windows Insider to select your insider ring.

Hopefully that helps and thanks to everyone in the thread who has made this possible!

So, I installed Redstone two days ago, I was this whole time in the last preview build available for the One M8. This phone is my daily driver.

At the beginning, the batery was worse than before, but now it seems is a little bit better, but nothing spectacular than when I had WP 8.1, At that time it could last more than one day. Before Redstone with W10M it was like 5 hours of really intense use. Now it should be like 7 hours of intense use.

Maybe is just biased psychological stuff but I feel the phone is faster and I like the notifications more than before. Before Redstone they were kinda messy.

The camera bug I had before (The first time I opened the camera App, I had to press like 2-3 times the shoot before it took the first photo) seems like is fixed also. But I have to try it a little bit more.

In general, I feel my phone is better now. I'm using the Lumia 950 registry entry and the instructions for changing the registry that are in the page 3 of this thread. Using the instructions in the first page always closes the Interop before I'm getting to the step I have to write things.

Do you guys recommend me to make a hard (or soft, I don't know) reset?

You should read this full post. It has a lot of useful information. The very first post says "not" to do a hard reset or it will mess up the Redstone install. However, if you do need to do a hard reset, there is information on this post how to get the phone back to Redstone but it looks like a bit of work. Doing a soft reset may fix any issues you are having with Redstone since I've been on it now for 4 days and everything so far works excellent and my battery life is now almost as good as it was while on w8.1. I had some original issues with the camera and App notifications but both were fixed with a soft reset.

When I first updated from w8.1 to w10 my battery life was terrible. I found from another post string on this website (http://forums.windowscentral.com/ht...d-windows-10-my-htc-one-m8-any-questions.html) that it was due to Backup Assistant Plus. It does not work with W10 and kills your battery life so if you have it installed, you'll have to do a Hard Reset and start from scratch installing W10 using the directions earlier on this post but DO NOT start the Backup Asst. Plus.

Again, for the last 4 days I've been on Redstone using the info on how to install from this post. I don't have any of the problems that others have listed prior and on other postings on this website. My battery is almost as good as it was on W8.1; my camera button on the lock screen works perfect; my camera in general works perfect (both front and back cameras); my App notifications work perfect; general use seems faster. I'll update this post if I find any problems in the future but so far I'm very pleased with Redstone.

Yes, I have a Verizon phone, but the backup assistant thing doesn't get activated because I don't live in the US.

But I'm with you, now the phone feels better than before, after two days of use. The camera issues are solved also, battery definitively is better. I don't think I need to do a soft reset for now but... How do you do that? Maybe I can do that later.

The only thing doesn't work anymore is the HTC video maker app. I used to use that sometimes. Is a pity doesn't work anymore.

The phone feels so good now that I'm thinking about going back to the HTC registry and let the phone like that until it dies, I'm scared Microsoft screw everything up with the next update, and I'm in the fast ring, so you never know...

Thoughts?

Doing a soft reset is simple and doesn't hurt anything. When I was on the last release for W10, I had to reset 10 times a day just to reconnect to my data usage. That is why I did this whole change to get to Redstone. To do a soft reset, simply push the power and volume down buttons at the same time holding until it reboots, probably about 10 seconds. If you don't want any further updates until they are tested and working, I suggest you just change your Insider Ring to the lowest setting called "Release Preview". Settings/updates & security/Windows Insider program/select your download choice. I picked the "slow" so I don't get brand new releases like on "fast" but don't have to wait until they are completely stable with "release preview". It's your choice. If you really don't want any future builds just select the "stop Insider preview builds" but I suggest just using "slow" or "release preview" levels.

Brandon_T_R - This worked like a charm. Thank you. It's performing an OTA update right now to the latest version. I've not edited the registry yet. I was very happy to see the MS Camera App working again. HTC Camera app no longer works. (Which is fine with me.)

I had switched to the Note 7 (as VZW has given up on all Windows phones) since my HTC was stuck at Win 8.1 and all kinds of buggy. Well we all know how the Note 7 ended up, so I'm going back to my HTC until the new phones are released next year. (And honestly - Android was still Android after all these years - nothing to write home about.) Missed my Win10 phone. :)

Thanks again!
