How to update apps in Windows 8.1

A few of my app icons have an update arrow in the bottom corner. Do apps update automatically? If so, how do I force them to update manually?

Go to the windows phone store and it will show you a update icon on the bottom of the screen. It will also tell you how many updates you have.Tap it and it will show you all the updates you have available. Click each one and it will tell you about the update and show you how big it is. You can then tap it and it will download the update and install it. What I have not found out is how to get rid of a update you do not want. They do not update automaticlly.

If you go to the lower left and click on the settings cog you can set it to update your apps automatically

Thanks, but I'm referring to Windows 8.1 on my Surface, not the phone.

Nevermind, I was thinking of settings OUTSIDE the app instead of being IN the app itself.
