I am trying to remove my shortcut arrows, how can I do this?

I am trying to remove my shortcut arrows.

I have followed the instructions and I have done this many times with different ",0, 5, 50..etc) regardless of the string every time I reboot the arrow is gone but I have a blank black/white box there instead. It is also making my pc unstable, windows are not loading as quick. Granted I added some custom icons, but the ones that came with the programs have the box too. Any suggestions. I am deleting the key for now, and just be a tad annoyed with the arrows.
