I Found It!

Like others have reported in this forum, my phone has been waking up on it's own once in awhile. That, and the data link has been turning itself on too. I'd turn it off and put the phone in the holster and the next time I went to use it, the data link would be on again.

I checked all the usual programs to be sure they were set to manual updates and downloads, but the problem continued. It's been driving me nuts, but I finally found the guilty app today while I was eating lunch at work: Pocket Express is set to update itself every four hours by default. I set it to manual update and my phone has been behaving ever since!

That's a trend I've noticed about this phone: Most of the included software is pre-programmed to update itself or do automatic downloads by default. I have one of Sprint's "Everything" plans so this wouldn't cost me extra, but it could definitely surprise someone who was paying for services a la carte. It could also have a significant impact on the battery life between charges.

The bottom line is if you're like me and don't want your phone doing things you don't deliberately ask it to, you need to check the configuration screens in every program.
