If Lumia 640 XL is the upgrade to 1320, why is the CPU slower in Antutu etc?

Really wanted the 1320 until i heard about the 13mpix camera etc in the 640 xl but after looking at the specs, the 1.7ghz dual core of the 1320 seems a lot faster when looking at the benchmarks. Im pretty sure that will result in slow image captures etc of the much better camera in the 640xl.

I just wonder if Microsoft went a little too far in making the CPU just too cheap for this new phone?

I want an upgrade when i buy a phone and usually a CPU is a given as the main upgrade in any phone

I dont know whats to understand when the upgrade performs slower than the phone its supposed to be an upgrade from. im asking a legitimate question however and just wondered if i was alone in thinking this.

Benchmarks usually don't portray the real story. The 1320 due to its high clock speed might be slightly faster in benchmarking apps but multi threaded applications are actually faster on the 400. Plus battery life is better and you get sensor core features. GPU is more or less the same

BTW are you coming from an android platform?

They did mention they own a 1320. Lots of people get caught up in specs, even on WP.

I don't see the 640XL having any difficulty with processing images or anything personally. A lot comes down to the OS and how it handles things as well.

If you want to know if it will perform well for your personal requirements, go find one on display at a store and play with it. That's the true test. Don't trust any benchmark.

I started with iOS years ago then moved to Android and 3 years ago, bought my first WP. I loved it and actually managed to get 6 other people to dump iOS and get them but i ended up getting the Galaxy Note. Now I can't be arsed with Android and want something new and I love the texting on the WP. I got my dad who is 76, the 1320 and I love it. I dont care about the App store being bare in comparison to Playstore etc but on his 5mpx camera, i managed to get some manual control over the camera for close ups which totally sold me. That and the simplicity of the phone and the texting and I really want a 6" screen too. I can't seem to buy a new 1520 anywhere and so 640XL is my only option just now. Looks great but i was just concerned about the CPU but as explained, multitasking etc should be better.

Thanks for the info guys:)

overall from the "gaming performance" videos I saw it look like the 640XL does a great job running heavy games .

also since Lumia640Xl launch price is cheaper than Lumia 1320 I think we might see other XL phones , like Lumia 840 XL (with OIS , snapdragon 615 CPU ,and maybe a 6 inch screen )

Thing is that the 1320's dual core is based on the Cortex A9 based Krait architecture which is much more powerful than Cortex A7 on the 640 XL. This along with the higher clock translates to better performance especially when in opening apps and raw performance but due to quad core setup XL will perform better on multitasking. They also have the same GPU so gaming too should be identical. The one huge gain though is that Cortex A7 is significantly more efficient than Cortex A9 and less prone to heating.
So in some senses its better while in other things its worse off.
Its not really MS's fault since Qualcomm really messed up the midrange line of chips last year. SD 410 would have been a better choice but its not significantly faster either and the system being 32bit won't benefit much from the 64bit processor.

i have both 1320 and 640xl, there's nothing significant different, except the camera.

Go for the 640XL, its newer, cheaper and easier to repair than 1320

Another 640XL perk, its 49g lighter than the 1320 ie 171g vs 220g.

also the 640XL have a lot better battery life , a better screen with no light leaking at the sides

Look, these benchmarks does not paint the whole picture. I mean why would you based your decision on the result of a benchmark? Really?
I think you will be happy with the 640XL. The L1320 is so yesterday now, if somebody will give you a L1320 and not pay for it then maybe but if you are deciding for a purchase- its a no brainer 640XL is the best choice.
