Is WiFi calling working on the new 640. lately, T-Mobile has been selling phones with a "promise" that WiFi calling will arrive in a future update.

Mine works well using Wifi calling. The setting to turn it on/off are in a sort of tricky location. Also, while it does not explicitly say, I just activated my free year worth of Office 365 after downloading the Office 365 gift app.

Please share, as I can't find it.
Yeah, I found it by accident actually so you're not alone.
Go to Settings, cellular+SIM, and tap "SIM" under SIM settings.
There, you'll see the options for Wifi calling.

It worked well with WP8.1 for me. I updated to the latest TP 10136 but the option for WiFi calling isn't available.

Are you in 2014? Honestly, TM hasn't alluded to "soon" for over a year. The phones promised back then included the 521, the 810 - which never happened - and the 925 bug fixes. There may have been others, but I'm not familiar with them.

TMO has stumbled around WFC since 2006. They've had three names for this, some phones had it early on in the hardware, some later in the software. No one in CS understood anything about this amazing protocol (actually called Unlicensed Mobile Access within the GSM protocol,) and there are, and remain many misconceptions about it to this day. My observation is that probably someone at TMO, probably Steve L. woke up: "Holy ****! We have a unique way of connecting when OTA is ****ty or non-existent, a real sales advantage! But we need to have EVERY new TM phone able to use it!"

BTW, the only other company with UMA, actually a bit before TMO, is regional Cincinnati Bell. ATT announced that they would have it this year, but do date, I've seen nothing. Republic Wireless has hacked the same end results into the Sprint network with their phones.

Check out the embedded picture. Perhaps you might want to look up the HTC One (M8) Windows [promised WFC, never delivered], Blackberry Classic (also "soon" - not yet delivered)... And unless the letters "soon" mean something else, TMO is still using soon!

im not a fan of wifi calling. it should just be used for emergency but I am not about to use my internet for tmobiles benefit. I'm paying Tmobile for their cell tower service. and I'm not paying them to leech off my home internet data.

The only advantage to it is that apparently if you are out of the country and you are staying in a place that has wifi, you can use it to call a number in the US apparently. Here though, I don't even bother. T-mobile is slowly getting better (at least in my area) and it's really not worth bothering with. The update probably made it better.

Microsoft now enabling native Wi-Fi calling, HD Voice on the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL | Windows Central

That is indeed a benefit. I'll keep that in mind next time I leave the country.

Has anyone found a quick and easy way to toggle WiFi Calling on and off without going through all the screens? A shortcut would be nice.

i cant answer your question directly, but have tried just setting it to prefer cellular? that was one of the first things i did.. that way the wifi calling will only kick in if no cell service is found.

swipe left on the screen where you enable/disable wifi calling
