I upgraded my old PC to Windows 10 because I thought I might as well get my upgrade registered. In the past you're free to change your hardware as you please and then call that horrible number to do the 25 digit activation thing. However after building a new PC Windows 10 wont activate because the installation code cannot be verified. It directs me to Microsoft support and they tell me that because I changed my hardware, the key cannot be used any more and I have to buy a new key...... which costs a monumental price of ?190? Who would pay that much? Windows 8 was ?25 from Microsoft when that came out.

I don't understand why this change has happened, I've always changed my hardware in the past and they've accepted my key. So Microsoft are telling me every time I make hardware changes, I need to purchase a new key.

Ok off to bittorrent I go.... thanx Microsoft, stop blaming piracy for a lack of sales and blame poor business practices.

First of all is your key a retail key or an OEM or OEI Key?

Secondly did you use sysprep?

Grant,
I would highly advise against BitTorrent and pirating software. You should call and speak with a representative about the issue and see if they can help you activate the product. Otherwise, I would say install 8.1 on it and upgrade to Windows 10 from there. It may not be the best solution, but it may be better.
Windows 8 and 8.1 was quite the change which is why they lowered the price substantially. When I bought the pro version it was only $15 from Microsoft. The best course of action is to try and work with Microsoft to resolve it. Again, advise you haven't changed any hardware in the system and inquire why it thinks you did.
Hope that helps a bit.
