IMAP and Google question

i know google is getting rid of activesync support next year. i still use my gmail on my lumia 920. when i set up a google account i noticed it's an IMAP set up and not an activesync set up. or is it? google is still supporting IMAP and i get the push's to my phone pretty fast when my gmail gets a new email. so my question is, when wp8 sets up your google email from "add an account", does it technically do an activesync or is it really an IMAP set up that we dont really have to worry about when google drops activesync support?

If you do "Add an account" and select "Google" it will be IMAP
If you select "Outlook" (Exchange) it will be setup with EAS
