Install os and system files to sd?

Just wondering if it was possible to actually have the system files install to an sd card. I know this is not possible from storage sense. Could it be possible after a reset?

Generally SD memory is much slower than internal flash and the system files reside on internal flash for speed, consistency and protection.

At one point I heard OS upgrades could use SD memory to store the new image but haven't heard anything about that recently.
