Internet sharing - more than browsing?

I have a Nokia Lumia 820, which I use for business and a personal android phone. The Nokia has a better data plan and is 4G, I'd like to use internet sharing with my other device for games (mainly - Ingress.) Both my phones use EE in the UK.

While Internet Sharing seems to work fine for browsing purposes, it doesn't seem to work for Ingress or Maps. Is there anything about internet sharing that blocks certain uses of data? Or something else I'm missing? Are there settings I can play with to make this work?

Internet sharing can be controlled by the carrier itself on their end. So they may be blocking the port required for some apps or games to work correctly.

Bummer- but that makes sense. Is there any way I can check that on the phone? or would I need to speak to the carrier?

I'm with EE and have found no restrictions on tethering at all.
I don't know what Ingress is, but I've certainly used the maps (from my surface) through the internet sharing option. :|
I'd suggest a call to their customer services, but to be frank, I doubt that will help! lol
