Is 8.1 gdr 2 likely to get released outside of preview?

Curious to see if gdr 2 is likely to be released for those outside of the preview. I have exited the preview and not sure if I'll rejoin it for my daily driver.

Doubt very many phones will ever see GDR2 8.1 as Win 10 is taking up all of Microsofts time. I will be happy if any of me and my wifes WPs ever see Win 10 let alone 8.1 GDR2.

They will, because the security patch is essential in GDR2 and those of us who won't be installing W10 will need it. Going by the feedback on W10, there will be quite a number sticking with W8.1 so to unexpectedly end support so soon would really wind up customers.

GDR2 is already around and can be installed via the insider program, have recently installed onto a 920 and a 930 with no issues seen. The settings menu is the only really visable change I have noticed.

OP asked outside the Preview.

Its officially announced for some x30 devices, but I really don't care since 10 is literally right there. I can live with the settings list as it is now for the time being.

How did you manage to get it installed on the 920 without windows 10 preview? Please help as i'm loving the snappiness of gdr2 on my 930 and would like it on my 920 as well.

You need to be on Denim first. Then there is only a few variants that get it. My Rogers Lumia 920 and 830 both are sporting Update 2. The update gets downloaded right before the W10TP update starts. That's when you know you need to stop

I got to update 2 ( 920) but it kept prompting to update to tech preview until it eventually automatically updated it [to W10tp]. Is there a way to stop it from updating to W10tp?

Right before you start you can uncheck "automatically download updates" under the updates menu

Best way is before GDR 2 disable automatic dowloading updates, after when GDR 2 is installed back up everything and do a hard reset. This way you are completly out of the insider program until when you want to install a upcoming W10 build.
