Is hardware to blame for Lumia 1520 problems

After being plagued by lock-ups, random switches to search and other issues, I sent my phone back under warranty. After all of 10 minutes on the test rig (reinstalling the software, I suspect) it was sent back with a "no fault found" message.
The problems persisted.
Following some comments on here, I decided to buy a metal cover - light weight and unobtrusive. The problems have disappeared.
Maybe the phone does bend!

Or maybe it protects it from electrostatic charge. I wanted to try this, but I really dislike using a case on a phone I've paid 500€, it's like not using it at 100% =/
