Is Lumia 950 better than Lumia 1020

I have been planning to upgrade from my 2 year old 1020 to a 950. I have my doubts will 950 be a worthy upgrade. Specially, is the camera on 950 superior than 1020? What about the battery backup? I read a lot of negative reviews about 950 and really in dilemma for my next purchase. I am even considering Samsung/LG flagships. Help me decide.

I don't think it is $500 or whatever better. The camera is quite good, but you don't have as much cropping ability as you do in the 1020. If you didn't use the full size 1020 images I think you'd be quite happy.

I've had my 950 since 12/23 and can say is has surpassed my old 1020 in every way.

Thank you everyone for your input. Lesser zooming on 950 is acceptable. However, low light capabilities on 950 should be superior than 1020. i.e. non pixilated images.

I used a 1020 for about 1.5 years and I'm a heavy camera user. I can say without a doubt the camera on the 950 is an upgrade from the 1020. The 1020 is better for huge crops but other than that my Lumia 950 is the winner on a comparison. Especially in low light.

Thanks Kris. Ordering a 950 right away. I am from India.
Expecting a decent battery back up. Quitting my decision to buy a S6edge+

I just replaced a 1020 with a 950 and I'm very happy with the upgrade. Camera is better and faster. The new flash and post processing options are really nice. I do miss my camera grip with extra battery and tripod mount though. I would love to see an accessory like that for the 950/950XL.

If you don't take Xenon flash stop motion photography with your Lumia 1020, then you're going to be alright with the Lumia 950. LED "flash" just isn't the same. Other than that, camera should perform much better in the Lumia 950. All other specs are better, of course, being generations younger.

Is that taken with your 1020?

I laughed when I saw this post, but I understand your concern, me coming from lumia 1020 I had same thoughts, it's even better, it takes the lumia 1020 phrase which the 1020 had " Nothing Else Comes Close"

Replaced 2 1020s, one with a 950 and the other with an XL. HAVENT LOOKED BACK. I do miss some aspects, the unique look and just knowing its 41mp. But lets be honest, MP dont make the picture good. We also arent printing billboards so the 41mp was a gimmick to begin with. I miss it, but dont regret schilling the cash for the new phones one bit. Its smoother and faster in every way.

Yes. The camera now has 3 different coloured LEDs to produce realistic colour scenes. Its faster, thinner, bigger and more.

Haha. The reason I made this thread is to utilise my $ fruitfully. Earlier, after buying 1020, I bought a 1520 and a 930 subsequently. None of the former two could match the camera quality of 1020. Ultimately, both 1520 and 930 ended up resting in my cupboard. Barely used for more than a couple of hours (say not more than 5 hrs each). So, this time I want to replace my 1020 with a 950 only after complete assurance from tech gurus here for 950s enhanced camera performance over 1020 and 950 being a worthy successor. :D. Call me camera freak. Thank you.

Yeah, there are some things a Xenon flash is good at, but I'm getting much better overall color and exposure with the 950. I dont get that blasted effect that happens too often with flash photography. I usually hesitate to use flash at all, and only do so when absolutely required. Even then, I try to lower the shutter speed to get more of a natural balance. The 950 has really impressed me - I especially like the ability to adjust how much flash to apply after the shot.

I also almost never use flash (except for stop-motion); even when using a DSLR I do not use a flash (given that it can be bounced off, direct, softened, etc.) - relying on the sensitivity of the sensor by fixing shutter speed priority. Given that, the Lumia 950 should perform better than the Lumia 1020 since the sensor is most likely more sensitive (better low-light performance). Nonetheless, it's still nice to have an extra feature which the Xenon flash uses. If ever I buy a Lumia 950/XL, I may never use that triple LED flash anyway for the same reasons why I don't use a flash using a DSLR - flashes tend to scare away humans on the streets.
