Is Microsoft trying to be unpredictable?

I think that Microsoft is trying to be unpredictable. If there is a common perception among people that Microsoft will make a phone next year, trust me they will not. On the contrary, if people start believing that Microsoft will never make another Windows phone, they may surprise you and that's their end game. They don't want to become predictable as it helps to remove the preconceived bias. I mean look at what happened to Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. By the time of its launch, people had already developed a mind set that it's not a good phone and has average looks. Sure there were problems in the software but look at it now. It works perfectly but no one cares. The dame is already done.

The 950 / 950xl fell victim to snobby tech blogs, not being on Verizon and sporting a new and unfinished OS. Had nothing (as I see it) to do with MS's predictability.

Interesting thought. Are you referring to their consumer facing front, mobile/device division, or just Microsoft?

One would have to ask, why do we want to predict Microsoft in the first place. Maybe because we want what we want. In the consumer world there are all sorts of tactics for all types of business being made. Microsoft definitely has a role in what gets sourced out to the world wide web, reports, articles, etc. I just assume to let them be Microsoft. Business is business, so whatever needs to happen will happen. We just need to let it play out.

Ehm, no. For a company like MS, which caters primarily to corporate customers, appearing unpredictable would be the worst idea ever. No way that's what they are doing.

If they appear unpredictable to you, it only means you don't understand what they are doing and why.
