Is Skype free to use

I installed Skype on my phone and when I go to make a call it says that I don't have credit. I thought it was free.

Skype is free to call other Skype users. Obviously, calling a landline or mobile phone with it is not free.

So it has to be between computer to computer then to be free?

No. You can call phone to computer (and vice versa) or even phone to phone just fine, for free. It just has to be done via Skype. If you want to call someone without access to Skype (e.g landline), it will cost you.
