Is Text Messaging tied to Skype?

Reading a lot of posts about people turning off the background task for Skype due to battery concerns - I'm wondering - if you do that - will you not be able to receive text messages? Or Skype messages?

Just wondering how integrated they are as when I look at that background task on my phone - it shows the Text application icon for messaging and Skype...

I still get sms from my contacts. Neither I nor my friends use skype so I can't comment there. I've turned messaging on in the background but signed out of skype
