Is the SSD on the Core M3 model slower than the one on the i5 model?

Yes, there are articles out there that show this. There are also reports that the i5/256 models either ship with a Samsung (slower) or Toshiba (faster) drive. It will be interesting to see what the i7s bring.

I heard the 128Gb SSDs are SATA whereas the 256Gb+ SSDs are PCIe

NVMe-capable devices. The Samsung series use the PCI Express 3.0 x 4 interface connects to an M.2 slot

I never said it was faster/same did I? I simply corrected the SATA nonsense rumor with fact.

In general its well known by those "in the know"...the larger the SSD the better it performs.

In reality who cares its a fast SSD regardless and people (users) get so enamored with stats ..use the thing and see if it lags

And I'll save $100-500 and not care about the stats. Seriously people get a life there are much bigger things in the world to worry about than the SSD in the M3..use it if it works great if not return it..simple (14 day return policy)

People like MP3's correct... oh but 90% or the data is lost...yet where is the uproar?
Are we all going to run out and by a $400 Neil Young "lossless" Pono player..of course not.

Why? Because it does not make any difference. You don't need the best always and sometimes it DOES NOT MATTER.

What does matter is the M3 is fanless, lighter and uses less energy AND costs less. Its perfect choice for the SP4 and people need to quit trying to pick it apart as it is the best choice and is an amazing device...be happy.

Also, you said the reviewer = user error. Nope, he was right in saying the 128GB drive in his Core m3 Surface Pro 4 is slow. It's slow by even SATA SSD standards; let alone NVMe.

Go ahead and be happy that the Core M3 model works well for you. That doesn't mean it'll work for everyone, and all you're doing at this point is trolling.

I did not put anyone down for buying an i5/i7 , I did point out that that is not the wisest choice in a 12.3" tablet and it has a fan. Which no one can really argue against effectively.

If someone feels put down well that is on them not me. I'm confident in my choice.

There's a very easy argument which everyone made already. If you want the SP4 as a tablet/light use you get the M3. If you want a tablet for real work you get the i5. If you have enough money to not care about the price you get the i7. For my usage (which for work relies mostly on connecting remotely to my work computer so mainly light use on the local machine) I would be more than happy with the M3 if it had a bigger SSD and more memory. Nobody can argue that in 2015 4Gb RAM and 128Gb SSD is not enough (even for casual use). And the fan is a non issue if it works like the SP2 I currently have, which I never hear. If the fan turns out like the i7 SP3 then I will return the i5 SP4 I ordered and wait for the M3 with larger SSD and RAM which will eventually come along as I doubt the guys at Microsoft are stupid not to market that.

My understanding is that the m3 model comes it the same SSD that my SP2 came with... and if that's the case I don't think you'll notice even if it is slower than the i5 SP4. I haven't noticed a difference.

What I have noticed is that the USB 3.0 port is much faster on my SP4 than the port on my SP2.

Whether M3 or I5 , a 128GB SSD is slower than a 256 GB SSD in general. But probably fast enough
The poor Samsung write performance could be a driver problem. At least, this is described on other websites .

Just in case Trusted Reviews has noted that a firmware update improves performance.
