Java stopped working on my Surface Pro 3

Windows Central Question

To log into my work system I need citrix and must log in through explorer (not Edge). The system must have Java enabled and although it used to work perfectly it stopped working recently and I just get the message that Java must be enabled. I need help.

Have you recently upgraded your JRE version? Might want to try going back a version to test. And what exactly is the error message? Might have to check with your workplace IT dept to see if they can help as well.

I think it only happened on the last upgrade from Java which I installed just in the last week or so. It overwrites the previous version so I can't go back to that and I also installed it a second time because I thought it possible I'd installed it wrong.
