[L1020] Screen crashing?

hi i just brought a second hand 1020 for 155 pounds. there were a lot iof infentismal silver scratches in the camera circle area but the main possibly negative symptom is that i had unknowingly run out of battery and the screen froze in thousands of dull not bright multi colours. i took the sim out put it back in then hooked it up to my computor and soon the normal boxes on the screen and functions were working and the thousands of dull pixilations had gone although i wasn;t in the room when it came back to normal

is this normal behaviour when the battery is low or should i send it back

Send it back. The phone should just shut down when the battery level becomes critically low.
