So i've decided to get an SD card for my Lumia 640. I've looked online and basically made up mind my mind as to which one i'm going for.
But my question is... Can you save the system updates ( windows updates etc ) on the SD card or does that have to be stored on the internal memory? That's what killed my old phone. The updates took up all the storage on my phone and rendered it completely useless.

So.. Can you save everything on the SD card or just pics and videos? I can't seem to find any information on this online.

SD can store:
Downloads
Documents
Videos
Pictures
Or any file folder created by you.

Most apps can be stored or moved over but not accessed.
There is no access to any system files to date.
Before Storage Check Beta was made unavailable maps could be stored on SD that however was done away with.

Before Denim if there was a firmware/software update the download package was downloaded to the internal storage and then the preparing /updating started. But after DENIM the update package can also be stored on a SD card. So now the free internal memory is less likely to be a problem during an OTA.

But after an update the "remainders" of the update package are deleted so I do not understand why they "killed" your phone.

And as already said a lot of apps can be stored on a SD card but not all. Some have to be installed on internal memory due to the nature of the app ("critical" and/or developer choice).

What i meant by it ruining my phone was that it got totally crammed with updates. Filled up the memory completely, This was a cheap Samsung phone. That's why i bought this Lumia. I don't want that to happen again. At least not within the first 6 months.

So i can store firmware updates on the SD card? That would be pretty sweet.
I've only got 2GB left on the phone. Gonna be a short ride if it can't be stored on the SD.

No you can not "store" firmware on the SD card.
If you get an OTA update than you first need to download this update as a zip file. Now this zipfile can be stored on the SD card. (but this is only needed temporary). The zipfile is used for the actual update process and after the update this zipfile is deleted by the system.
And updates do not fill up your internal memory. Maybe the system file gets a little bigger but that's it.
You can however use storage sense to see what uses memory and (ones a while and delete "temporary files" and internet history)
