Lost phone locking

Hi All,

Whilst overseas recently I unfortunately lost my 520.
I had to wait until I got home to issue the lock phone command from the PC but all it appears to do is send a txt message to the mobile phone number I registered which seems pointless if the person who found it just buys a new sim. Is this how it works or once that phone gets an internet connection again will it get the lock message via some other means?
